Flashtoglory motors in deep stretch to win the $90,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Stakes

Owner/trainer David Meridyth’s talented New Mexico-bred Flashtoglory powered home in deep stretch under jockey Christian Ramos to win Sunday’s 24th running of the 90,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

The 5-year-old mare by First Moonflash broke evenly from the starting gate of the 400-yard dash, then showed good acceleration down the center of the course under Ramos to prevail by a half-length, finishing ahead of EZ On My Mind and jockey Omar Iturralde. Flashtoglory stopped the clock with a swift time of 19.44 seconds, earning a 91 Equibase Speed Index.

Flashtoglory has now won three straight races, including her first career stakes win last month at Zia Park in the New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship. Her victory in the Wooten and Valentini Stakes gives her six wins from 22 lifetime starts with earnings of more than $360,000.

Sent off as the 11-to-10 post time favorite, Flashtoglory returned $4.20 to win. The $2 exacta with EZ On My Mind paid back $35.60. Chicka Boom Babe finished third with Miss Baby Cartel rounding out the top four finishers.

Live racing at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino resumes on Thursday with a first post time of 12:25 p.m.
