Corrina Corrina headlines $80,000 La Coneja Stakes

Corrina Corrina, New Mexico’s all-time leading money earning thoroughbred, will look to add to her legacy when she faces a field of seven rivals in Sunday’s 22nd running of the $80,000 La Coneja Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Trained by Gary Cross for owner/breeder Derrick Jenkins, Corrina Corrina has amassed career earnings of more than $1.52 million and has won 22 times from 43 starts. The New Mexico-bred mare by Mr. Trieste has been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite for the La Coneja, which will be run as the eighth race on a nine-race program that has a first post time of 12:25 p.m.

Corrina Corrina won the La Coneja Stakes last year and has finished no worse than second in the race over each of the past three years. Last time out, Corrina Corrina was a fast closing second in the New Mexico State Racing Commission Stakes.

Of Corrina Corrina’s 22 lifetime wins, nine of them have come at Sunland Park. She will break from post two in the 6 furlong contest and will be ridden by her regular pilot Tracy Hebert.

First Again, a multiple stakes winner trained by Danny Morales, is the 3-1 second choice on the morning line for the La Coneja Stakes. Owned and bred by Larry E. Young, the 6-year-old mare by Axiomatic won a pair of stakes races last year including the New Mexico Classic Distaff at Zia Park last November. She has earned more than $490,000 while winning nine times from 31 career starts. Miguel Perez will have the mount aboard First Again and the pair will break from the five post.

Mo Money Time, who comes into the La Coneja having beaten Corrina Corrina when they last faced off in the New Mexico State Racing Commission Stakes over this course on January 4, is the 4-1 third choice on the morning line. Trained by Bart Hone for owner/breeder Brian Mundell, Mo Money Time is in search of her third straight win and will be ridden by Alfredo Juarez, Jr. in the La Coneja which has a scheduled post time of 3:32 p.m. First race post time is 12:25 p.m.
