Corrina Corrina rallies late to win $90,000 La Coneja Stakes

Corrina Corrina continues to add to her record-setting resume, coming from well off the pace to prevail in Friday’s 22nd running of the $90,000 La Coneja Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Already the richest New Mexico-bred thoroughbred of all time, the 6-year-old mare came from last down the backstretch, unleashing a powerful late run under jockey Tracy Hebert to defeat Scary Cherry by a neck. Trained by Gary Cross for owner Derrick Jenkins, Corrina Corrina has now amassed earnings of more than $1.2 million while winning for the 18th time from 35 career starts. Corrina Corrina ran the six furlongs in a final time of 1 minute, 9.5 seconds.

The daughter of Mr. Trieste is a two-time stakes winner this season at Sunland Park. She captured the $90,000 New Mexico Racing Commission Handicap earlier this month and has now finished first or second in all but one of her 12 starts at Sunland Park. Friday’s win is her first time winning the La Coneja Stakes, having finished second in the event in each of the last two runnings.

Sent off at odds of 1-to-5, Corrina Corrina returned $2.60 to her supporters. The $2 exacta with Scary Cherry paid back $8.80. First Again finished third with Our Time To Shine rounding out the top four finishers.

Racing resumes Saturday at Sunland Park with a first post time of 12:25 p.m.

Sunday, a stakes tripleheader is on tap, with the $350,000, Grade 1 Championship at Sunland Park scheduled as the 8th race on the card. Kj Desperado, the world’s richest Quarter Horse, will compete in the Championship at Sunland Park.
