One Mark rallies to score impressive win in $100,000 Jamison Memorial Handicap
One Mark and jockey Tracy Hebert scored an impressive, late-running score in Friday’s 20th running of the $100,000 Jamison Memorial Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
Trained by Todd Fincher and owned by Fincher Racing, LLC, One Mark was far back of the field early, but began passing horses on the far turn while racing widest of all. Hebert swung One Mark to the far outside and got the lead shortly into the homestretch before inching clear as the finish line approached, scoring a decisive 1 3-4 length victory while racing 6 1-2 furlongs in a final time of 1 minute, 16.98 seconds. One Mark’s last to first triumph was his second victory in a row this season at Sunland Park.
One Mark, a New Mexico-bred son of Marking, has now won two races in a row. He beat allowance company over this course in his most recent start and has now won eight times from 24 career starts, including three wins from four starts at Sunland Park. Friday’s win in the Jamison pads One Mark’s career bankroll to more than $333,000.
Sent off as the 3.10-to-1 post time favorite, One Mark paid back $8.20 to his winning backers. Holding on to finish second in the Jamison was Massive Roar, ridden by Alfredo Juarez, Jr. and also trained by Fincher, resulting in a $2 exacta payoff of $52. Henry On The Run rallied late and finished third under Christian Ramos with Delbert Too and jockey Jose Vasquez rounding out the top four finishers.
Let Him Be, the morning-line favorite for the Jamison Handicap, was scratched from the race earlier in the day.
Live racing at Sunland Park resumes Saturday at 12:25 p.m. with the headline event of the day being trials for the Grade 3 West Texas Derby. Seven trial races, beginning with Saturday’s third race, will be held for the 400-yard event, which will be run on Saturday, March 2.
