Hollywood Henry takes driving win in $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap
Hollywood Henry raised the stakes in the final furlong to drive past a stubborn Wheredoesthecashgo and win the $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.
The 6-5 favorite was ridden by former Sunland Park riding champion Ry Eikleberry, and the duo performed exquisitely in the clutch to fend off his nearest rival by a neck. Hollywood Henry has won his last three Sunland Park races for trainer Henry Dominguez. He rattled through the four and one-half furlongs in a fast 50.67 seconds and paid $4.40 to win.
The speedy New Mexico-bred son of Roll Hennessy Roll earned a $51,000 pay day for owner Bennie Vanecek of El Paso, Texas. His glossy record stands at 7 wins, 5 seconds and 1 third from 18 starts and a career bankroll of more than $241,000.
Eikleberry rode three winners on the card.
Wheredoesthecashgo ran his heart out with jockey Francisco Amparan. The pair led for much of the race and came up just short in second place. The runner-up sparked a $2 exacta worth $42.20.
Rig Time was closing with interest and finished third, beaten less than one length.
Simulcasting of the Kentucky Derby happens on Saturday, May 4. The live racing card includes the 60th running of the $150,000 Sunland Park Handicap starring 2018 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) winner Runaway Ghost, 2017 Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin at Lee and 2017 Sunland Park Handicap winner American Dubai.
The $149,353 Copper Top Futurity is also on Saturday.
Sunday’s closing day card includes the $324,124 West Texas Futurity (Gr. II) and the $393,483 New Mexican Spring Futurity. The live racing meet concludes on Sunday, May 5.
Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:50 p.m. and continues on Friday through Sunday of next week.
