Ry Eikleberry records 2,001st win
5-time Sunland Park riding champion Ry Eikleberry recorded his 2,000th and 2,001st career victories at Turf Paradise on Monday, Dec. 31. Eikleberry is currently stationed at Sunland Park and has 2 wins in the young meet. The 29-year-old jockey has been extremely successful over the last decade. His horses have earned over $32 million from nearly 12,000 mounts, and he remains a powerful force at Sunland Park.
Stellar stakes tripleheader on Sunday
A stellar tripleheader of stakes races is on tap for Sunday at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. The $85,000 La Senora Stakes (7th race), the $65,000 Bold Ego Handicap (8th race) and the $85,000 Four Rivers/John Deere Stakes (9th race) are complete with splendid fields.
The best three-year-old New Mexico-bred fillies collide in the La Senora at 6 furlongs. The co-feature marks a rematch between Roll On Matilda and African Heat. Roll On Matilda powered away to a near 6 length win over African Heat in the New Mexico Cup Lassie Stakes at Zia Park last fall. Todd Fincher trains the 5-2 morning line favorite. African Heat races for trainer Henry Dominguez. She used her ample speed to win the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity at Ruidoso Downs last summer.
The 27th running of the Bold Ego Handicap at five and one-half furlongs is a prodigious collection of the finest open fillies and mares in the Southwest. Defending champion Kell Paso rates the mild 5-2 favorite for trainer Greg Green in the 11-horse field. She was second in last year’s Harry Henson Handicap. Woman at the Well merits serious consideration following an outstanding 2018 campaign. The gray roan filly from the Weston Martin stable was a 3-length winner in the Petticoat Stakes at Albuquerque and most recently finished second in the Zia Park Distaff last November.
Steve Asmussen’s Raging Town and Robertino Diodoro’s Fight to Glory are also major players.
Super star New Mexico-bred three-year-old Hustle Up returns to Sunland Park in the Four Rivers/John Deer Stakes at 6 furlongs. The versatile and talented son of Abstraction won the Copper Top Futurity at four and one-half furlongs and the Steve Prather Stakes at one mile and 70 yards in 2018. In all, he won 6 of 8 races as a two-year-old and is strictly the one to beat for trainer Todd Fincher. Shane Laviolette rides the winner of over a $252,000.
Stakes winners Sunscreen, Diabolical Ruler and Roll On Diabolical are likely to make significant impacts.
Post time on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday is 12:30 p.m. 5 trials for the Shue Fly are slated for Friday’s card.
