Restrainedvegence wins $75,000 Curribot Handicap
Kelly Brinkerhoff and Bob Grayson’s Restrainedvengence showed determination in deep stretch under Francisco Arrieta before overcoming a claim of foul in winning Sunday’s 20th running of the $75,000 Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
The Kentucky-bred son of Hold Me Back laid close behind a pace duel through moderate early fractions of the 1 1/6th mile affair. Arrieta guided Restrainevengence to the outside lanes heading into the homestretch where they separated themselves from the rest of the field and battled in close quarters with Gato Guapo, ridden by Heribert Martinez. As the pair approached the wire, Restrainedvengence got the advantage, winning by a three-quarters of a length and crossing the finish line in a time of 1 minute, 42.32 seconds.
Trained by Val Brinkerhoff, Restrainedvengeance earned his sixth win from 21 career starts, adding $45,000 to his lifetime earnings of more than $409,000. Sent off as the 19-10 favorite in the six-horse field, Restrainedvengence returned $3.80 to win. The $2 exacta with Gato Guapo paid back a very gettable $18.40.
Prior to Sunday’s victory in the Curribot, Restrainedvengence was off the board in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita. Before that, he closed out a strong 2019 campaign with a win in the Zia Park Championship. Last summer, he also won the Rolling Green Handicap on the turf at Golden Gate Fields.
Gato Guapo ran well in his local debut, but was forced to settle for second, six lengths clear of third-place finisher Raagheb, while Winsham Lad Handicap winner Sheriff Brown rounded out the top four.
