Raagheb dashes to victory in $65,000 Winsham Lad Handicap

Under a cool ride from the sensational Luis Contreras, Raagheb darted up the rail for a daylight win in the 43rd running of the $65,000 Winsham Lad Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

The classy 7-year-old son of Street Cry exploded through an opening in upper stretch and marched away to a 2-length win in a sharp time of 1:35.21 for the one mile distance. The Justin Evans trainee beat some the finest routers in the Southwest with a splendid performance. Raagheb accelerated briskly pulling well clear of Deputy’s Echo and American Dubai who finished second and third, respectively. The former $25,000 claimer from Santa Anita earned $39,000 for owners Paul Miller and Bill Tomasic. The route loving gelding has 5 wins, 5 seconds and 5 thirds with earnings nearing $300,000.

Trainer Justin Evans is quickly approaching 2,000 career wins. The 5-time Sunland Park training champion won three races on Sunday. He has 1,994 career wins through Sunday night.

Deputy’s Echo and jockey Duane Sterling fought hard to get second place, three quarter lengths in front of former Sunland Park Handicap winner American Dubai.

Classy Class, Sky Defence and Izzy The Warrior rounded out the order of finish.

On Saturday, 2017 Harry Henson Handicap winner KP Wildcat ran a bold race at Santa Anita Park and finished a solid second in the Grade 3 La Canada Stakes. Karl Pergola owns the winner of over a half million dollars. Roimes Chirinos rode the six-year-old daughter of Include. The Sunland Park based horse is a 13-time winner.
